Tell us a little about yourself:
Originally from the Gulf Coast, have lived in Gardendale since 2007. I am a Registered Nurse but have been a stay at home mom for over 7 years now. Most of our family is 4+ hours away, so making time to work out without a babysitter just wasn't a priority for me. Also, being a stay at home mom allows you to pick at junk food ALL DAY!! After having our daughter, my thyroid decided to die on me. So on top of my already unhealthy lifestyle, having thyroid issues allowed me to really pack on the pounds. A LOT OF POUNDS, and my body was telling me something needed to change. What made you start CrossFit Gardendale?
My kids are 5 and 7 now, and with the lifestyle I was living it was getting harder to keep up with them. Carrying them upstairs to bed and being out of breath was probably the deciding factor to start. My husband and I thought about joining for a while, and he ended up trying it a month before I did (I was going to be the guinea pig but chickened out). He ended up liking it so much that on our 8 year anniversary date night, CFG was on the list of places to stop. Nothing more romantic than your husband bringing you into a gym full of sweaty people who look like they just went through hell, saying "You're next!" Might I add with a big goofy grin.Describe your first workout?
The first night of OnRamp was rough, and I was nervous, like I-might-possibly-puke-if-I-had-eaten-anything nervous. I remember aching for days from just a training class and started to wonder if this was for me. I'm so thankful for my husband keeping me on track and pushing me to stick with it.What goals have you accomplished so far?
Oh, where to start? I can do pull-ups, handstand push-ups, dead-lift almost twice my weight, and run 2 miles without walking! If you knew me when I first started, I wasn't able to run 200 meters without having to walk due to my legs cramping and coughing up part of a lung. For my measurable goals, I have lost 41 pounds and over 20" on my 5'2" body. The biggest accomplishment I have is just being able to keep up with my kids. What goals do you plan to accomplish?
My goals are to stay on track by eating healthy and exercising 4-5 days a week. Also, I would like to be able to do double-unders (jump rope) consistently. What hobbies or things do you like to do other than CrossFit?
I love spending time with my family, being outdoors, refinishing furniture, and crafting. What, if anything, has changed in your life since joining CrossFit Gardendale?
What hasn't changed?!? I am healthier and stronger than I have been in years, have more confidence, and doing things I never thought I'd be able to do.What advice would you give to any new members?
You are worth it. Don't let the price prevent you from joining. Take your lunch instead of eating out at fast food restaurants. You will have saved your monthly fee in no time and you'll get healthier and more capable in the process. Remember, it's a lifestyle change. You can work out all you want, but if you want to see real progress, you need to fuel your body with proper foods. Most of all, you are not in it alone. One of the things that makes CFG the best box in town is the coaches and fellow athletes. Everyone there genuinely wants to see you succeed. You aren't just joining a gym, you are joining a family.
