Name: Bethnee Durham
Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a wife, a mom, Jaxon's "Lovie" (grandmother), a teacher and a former pet therapy assistant. I have taught kindergarten/first grade for 27 years. I currently teach 1st grade at Gardendale Elementary. I volunteered with Hand-in-Paw for 7 years as a pet therapy assistant with my dog, Daisy. What made you start CrossFit Gardendale?
I've always participated in some form of exercise. I had gotten bored with walking and the typical workout at the gym. I injured my knee while working with a personal trainer and ended up having to have surgery. I also had surgery on both feet for tarsal tunnel syndrome....a result not exercising properly. Basically, I was discouraged because I kept having to have surgery for injuries that were a result of exercise! I suffer from scoliosis and the need to maintain muscle strength has been recommended, by my physicians since I was a teenager. I needed a change. I needed something to look forward to doing, and I wanted to have some sort of accountability. Several teacher friends had started going to CFG and I became interested. I started with an On-Ramp class and loved the variety of workouts that I was introduced to. Plus...the COACHES were so ENCOURAGING! I went in thinking, "I can't do this." I finished On-Ramp thinking, "I've got a long way to go." Bottom line...you just keep going. I have been a member of CFG for 3 years. I still have a long way to go...but the process of getting there is so satisfying. I look forward to the daily WODS, because it is always something different and challenging.Describe your first workout?
Every Hero WOD that I have been a part of, is my favorite. I get a mental image of that military hero in my mind and tell myself, "You are doing this in honor of THAT person. Give it all you've got."What goals have you accomplished so far?
My goals are simple. Show up, be there to encourage others, be there to do MY best. I am not competitive AT ALL. I only compete with myself. I love to see others accomplishing goals. It's not about me...it's about the community of athletes at CrossFit Gardendale. Those people are there to encourage one other All egos are left at the door....it's about working hard and cheering hard. That's what I love most! What goals do you plan to accomplish?
I wish I had started this many years ago (when I was young)! I have to make up for lost time! My goal is to just keep doing CrossFit. It's not some fad....it's my way of life. I feel 100% better, mentally and physically after every single WOD.What advice would you give to any new members?
YOU BE YOU. Do not feel intimidated. We all have our reasons for becoming athletes. It doesn't matter where you start. Just START. You will not like every WOD. There are some that you will HATE and want to skip. Don't do it. You just might surprise yourself. I've done this more times than I can remember. I LOATHED BURPEES in the beginning. Now, I actually don't mind doing them at all. Don't let your mind tell your body that you can't do this. When you realize what YOU are capable of doing....chalk it up to an accomplished goal and keep moving FORWARD. The best feeling is finishing a WOD, sweating like crazy, coming together with your fellow athletes and yelling "1,2,3...CFG!" Those fist bumps and high five's afterward will just make you want to come back for more!
